HOG-Philly Beer Week 2012

written by StingRay, photos by LaiYa Out Ali

Friday, June 1 marked the beginning of the celebrated Philly Beer Week, and the Philly Roller Girls had the opportunity to be part of the Hammer of Glory (HOG) relay, a tradition that kicks off the week with the “omnipotent symbol of our beloved Philly Beer Week” traveling to a number of checkpoints towards its final destination and the opening tap. Philly Roller Girls had the honor of escorting the HOG early in the relay.

The second leg of the relay was a perfect fit for PRG since the HOG needed to travel from Hop Angel to the Grey Lodge Pub, a 4.5 mile trek, in 45 minutes. Dotti Horror, LaiYa Out Ali, Mary that Motha OH GOD!, and StingRay strapped on their skates and gear and braved the roads of NE Philadelphia with The Cycrone! providing a vehicle escort. Along the route, PRG made new friends including several hard working Philadelphia Trash Collection employees. PRG arrived at the Grey Lodge Pub to the cheers of HOG fans, and beer, of course. Mary that Motha OH GOD! had the honor of reciting the speech and handing off the HOG to Scoats of the Grey Lodge Pub. Scoats was integral in coordinating PRG’s involvement and had this to say, "I can think of no better way to get the HOG across 4.5 miles of Northeast Philly than by the Roller Girls. I hope this becomes a yearly tradition." We couldn’t agree more!

----------

If you missed PRG with the HOG, you still have the chance to celebrate Philly Beer Week with (more) beer and roller derby. Cricket Hill, Official Beer of the Philly Roller Girls since 2008, provides their craft beers through the fantastic folks at Stockertown Beverages at PRG bouts, tournaments and promotional events. This Saturday, June 9, enjoy a cold Cricket Hill beer while PRG’s Liberty Belles take on the Gotham Roller Derby All-Stars, and the Heavy Metal Hookers face the Philthy Britches!
