A packed house continuously erupted throughout the early afternoon hours on Saturday as the second day of East Coast Derby Extravaganza stormed into action.
Two rinks of sanctioned Women's Flat Track Derby Association bouts and another track of fun-filled challenge bouts fulfilled the cravings of just about any roller derby enthusiast.
National attention was focused on several high-profile sanctioned bouts throughout the afternoon. The morning was kicked off with a meeting of the River City Poe's Punishers against the Central New York All-Stars. River City, out of Richmond, Va., started the morning off strong and set the bar high with 328 points, which was the highest scored by any team at ECDX heading into the evening bouts. Central New York managed 132 in defeat but ended up on the losing end on the scoreboard.
River City wasn't able to keep that trend later in the afternoon as it was defeated, 169-142, by the New Hampshire Skate Free or Die All-Stars. River City led by a point at the half but New Hampshire stormed back in the second half with 115 points to secure the win.
In other action, The Boston Massacre upended the AZRD Tent City Terrors, 203-187, in a back-and-forth duel that was decided in the final moments. The Phoenix Arizona squad opened up a 42-13 lead 12 minutes into the bout and pulled a short lead into the waning moments of the first half. Boston grabbed the lead early in the second half and nursed a small advantage until it was able to put the game with a big jam with four minutes remaining.
In an international match, Toronto CN Power took care of business against the Maine Port Authorities, 148-120. Maine jumped out to a 42-18 lead 15 minutes in, but the Canadian squad poured it on in the late moments. Toronto led by just three points with seven minutes left, but outscored Maine by 25 points the rest of the way.
Rose City, ranked No. 3 in the WFTDA's Western Conference overpowered Steel City, the No. 4 ranked team in the East by a 275-70 score.
In other games, the Hudson Valley Horrors outlasted the Harrisburg Nuclear Knockouts, 146-96; the Dominion All-Stars out of Norfolk, Va. skated past the Lehigh Valley Hissy Fits, 223-61; and the Ithaca League of Women Rollers defeated the New Jersey's Garden State Roller Girls, 170-131.
